        • Practice of innovative management model in day surgery of thoracic surgery

Some complex surgical procedures allow for day surgery benefited from the advancement of the concept of enhanced recovery after surgery and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Shanghai Chest Hospital has set up thoracic day surgery ward incorporating some lung tumor surgeries into day surgery. Through process innovation, model innovation and management innovation, relying on the full-process closed-loop day surgery management system, the day surgery ward runs efficiently. It can help effectively alleviate the difficulty of admission and operation, and improve hospital operation efficiency as well as reduce the economic burden of disease. At the same time, we hope to explore an innovative development path for the possibility of day surgery in complex thoracic surgery, and create a new mode of day surgery that can be replicated and promoted.

        • Role of participation in academic student associations in enhancing scientific innovation capability and comprehensive quality among undergraduate medical students

Objective To investigate the role of participation in academic student associations in enhancing the scientific innovation capability and comprehensive quality of undergraduate medical students. MethodsThis study was conducted from November to December 2022. Undergraduate medical students majoring in clinical medicine (five-year program) in grade 2017 and 2018 at West China School of Medicine of Sichuan University were included in the study. These students were divided into two groups based on their participation in a five-star academic student associations of West China School of Medicine: the exposure group and the control group. The study compared the average scores of compulsory courses during the first four years of undergraduate study, competency multi-station assessment scores, comprehensive quality assessment scores, and scientific innovation capability between the two groups. Subgroup and stratification analyses were also conducted based on grade level and average scores of compulsory courses. Results A total of 433 students were surveyed. Among them, there were 348 students in the control group and 85 students in the exposure group. The average scores of compulsory courses, competency multi-station assessment scores, comprehensive quality assessment scores, and scientific innovation capability of students in the exposure group were higher than those of students in the control group (P<0.05). Similar results were observed in subgroup analysis by grade level. The sub group analysis of the average scores of compulsory courses showed that in tertileⅠ(≥ 85 and ≤ 100 points) and tertileⅡ (≥ 80 and<85 points), the competency multi-station assessment scores, comprehensive quality assessment scores, and scientific innovation capability of the exposure group were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). However, in tertile Ⅲ (>0 and<80 points), the exposure group showed better scores in competency multi-station assessment scores and scientific innovation capability than the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Participation in academic student associations can effectively improve the scientific innovation capability and comprehensive quality of students with medium and above grades.

        • Exploration and reflection of the “advanced systematic research” teaching model for undergraduate medical students

The cultivation of scientific research ability of undergraduate medical students is an important direction of medical education reform. At present, there are many problems in medical undergraduate scientific research education, such as heavy curriculum burden, weak scientific research foundation, and one-sided evaluation of training effect. The teaching faculty of Department of Thoracic Surgery of West China Hospital of Sichuan University tried to advance the systematic scientific research training to the early stage of undergraduate course, put forward the “advanced systematic research” teaching model, and explored the practical path to solve the bottleneck problems such as high threshold and poor coherence of scientific research training through hierarchical curriculum design, dynamic management and comprehensive evaluation system. This article will systematically review the exploration process of the advanced scientific research mode of undergraduate medical students at home and abroad, summarize its limitations, and share the practical experience of the above “advanced systematic research” teaching model, so as to provide references and ideas for optimizing the scientific research education of medical undergraduate.

        • Quantitative analysis of the national undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training program in the field of traditional Chinese medicine

Objective To analyze the current status and development trends of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-related projects under the national undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training program (NUIETP), aiming to provide evidence for optimizing policies and practices in TCM innovation and entrepreneurship education. Methods Quantitative analysis and visualization were conducted on project data of TCM-related NUIETP initiatives published on the official platform from 2019 to 2024. Results A total of 245 091 projects data were included, including 4 398 projects related to TCM. From 2019 to 2024, the number of TCM-related NUIETP showed an overall upward trend, with innovation training projects accounting for the majority. Projects in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica disciplines dominated. The number of participating institutions continued to grow, with TCM institutions performing outstandingly. The most common team configuration consisted of five project members and one supervising instructor, with the number varying depending on the project type and discipline. Project topics were primarily focused on TCM, with clear project type positioning and distinct disciplinary characteristics. Conclusions The TCM-related NUIETP demonstrate a trend of expanding scale and innovation-driven development, reflecting the synergistic effects of policy support and institutional resources. However, challenges persist, such as weak entrepreneurial translation and insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration. Recommendations include refining management systems, fostering innovation-to-entrepreneurship pathways, strengthening multidisciplinary integration, and optimizing team structures to advance high-quality TCM innovation and entrepreneurship.
