Objective To summarize epidemiological characteristics, risk factors, treatment and preventive strategies for stoma site incisional hernia (SSIH) following prophylactic stoma reversal in patients with colorectal cancer, and to provide evidence for individualized precautionary measures in clinical practice. MethodRelevant studies on SSIH were systematically reviewed. ResultsThe incidence of SSIH is higher than that of conventional incisional hernia. Its occurrence is associated with multiple factors, including advanced age, obesity, chronic underlying diseases, stoma diameter and duration, parastomal hernia, intraoperative techniques, surgical site infection, and increased intra-abdominal pressure. Individualized preventive strategies including optimize patients’ general condition before operation, appropriate selection of stoma size and timing of stoma closure, optimization of fascial closure techniques and tension distribution during operation, and postoperative management focusing on infection control, nutritional support, and reduction of intra-abdominal pressure. In high-risk patients, prophylactic mesh reinforcement at the time of stoma closure can reduce the incidence of SSIH. ConclusionsThe development of SSIH is influenced by multiple factors. Perioperative risk assessment and multidisciplinary preventive interventions are essential. Further high-quality studies are warranted to optimize preventive strategies.
