闡述了 NNT 和 NNH 的定義和用途。NNT 用于治療前評估不治療給患者造成損害的可能性，NNH 用于評估治療可能給患者造成傷害的可能性，也可用于比較干預措施與陽性藥物比較的相對獲益或受損。與安慰劑比較時， NNT或NNH 為絕對效應量；與陽性藥物比較時，NNT 或 NNH 為相對效應量。當描述相對效應量時，通過RR或 OR、RD表示干預措施與對照的效應量大小關系。
